Could Detroit Lions be on verge of landing New England Patriots’ QB?

*This was originally published on Aug. 11, but after Brian Hoyer did not play in the New England Patriots’ third preseason game, this is very relevant.

Detroit Lions fans have been saying for years that if Matthew Stafford goes down with an injury, the team may not win a single game.

Unfortunately, that thought has generally been accurate and as things currently stand with the Lions, it’s truer now than ever as the backup QB situation in the Motor City is disgusting.

In the offseason, after deciding to move on from Matt Cassel, Lions GM Bob Quinn signed Tom Savage and David Fales to battle for the right to backup Stafford if need be.

With all due respect to Savage and Fales (along with the newly signed Josh Johnson), neither one of those gentlemen have what it takes to keep the Lions ship afloat if Stafford were to go down with an injury.

So, the question is, should the Lions roll with what they have and pray Stafford does not get hurt or should they try to upgrade their quarterback room?

To me, the answer is simple.

I believe Quinn should get on the phone with his former team, the New England Patriots, and offer a late-round draft pick for quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Hoyer may currently be the backup for Tom Brady but the Patriots went out and drafted a quarterback by the name of Jarrett Stidham (I wanted the Lions to draft him) and by most accounts, he has looked very good so far.

Because of Stidham’s play thus far, Bill Belichick and the Pats could be willing to let Hoyer go for a draft pick.

Hoyer, a former Michigan State signal-caller, has played very little over the past couple of seasons but he has proven that when given a shot, he can more than hold his own. In fact, from 2015-2016 Hoyer passed for 25 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions in 17 games (Houston and Chicago).

Not only would Hoyer be valuable on the field if called upon but he would be extremely valuable in the Lions QB room as he has spent all or parts of five seasons with the great Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

Pick up the phone and cut a deal, Bob. Hopefully, Hoyer would never be needed in a regular-season game, but if he is, you will be happy you have him over Savage, Johnson, or Fales.
