What to watch for in the preseason opener:

1. Ameer Abdullah. Abdullah has been very impressive so far in training camp. Now, with Joique Bell still being on the PUP list, Abdullah will get a chance to show what he can do in an NFL game. Theo Riddick is listed as the starting running back, but Abdullah will surely get some touches in the first half.

2. Defensive line. This will be the first time the Lions will take the field without Ndamukong Suh since he was drafted to the team in 2010. Haloti Ngata, who was picked up via trade in an attempt to fill the hole, will be absent with a hamstring injury. Caraun Reid and Tyrunn Walker have both had strong training camps, and will be the featured tackles in this game.

3. Offensive Line. There are plenty of new faces on the offensive line, as well. Travis Swanson will get the nod at center, and Manny Ramirez will be at left guard. First round draft pick Laken Tomlinson will be in the mix as well, as he is expected to be starting at tackle when the regular season begins.

4. Stephen Tulloch. It’s been a long time since we last saw Tulloch in game action. Since tearing an ACL while celebrating a sack last season, Tulloch has completed his rehabilitation in the off-season, and says he is “back to being me.”

5. One for the JetsGeno Smith will not be suiting up this week for the Jets. Nor will he be doing so for the next 6-10 weeks after suffering a broken jaw after now former teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali punched him in the face. Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will get the start for the Jets, with rookie Bryce Petty playing as backup.

Who’s with me, Nation? It’s been a long time coming for football season to finally get here. Now, it’s actually here. Let’s go Lions!
