Detroit Lions Week 11 Report Card: Just keep stacking ’em; earn their third straight win!

This past week the Detroit Lions continued their win streak with a 31-18 over the New York Giants. This one was a well-played game for the Lions on both sides of the ball with key plays made by the defense to shut down one of the best rushing attacks in the league and the offense did what it wanted when it needed to. Let’s grade each position after this one.

Detroit Lions Week 11 Report Card

Detroit Lions Week 11 Report Card: Offense

Quarterback

This might be the lowest grade of them all on the offensive side, but Jared Goff went 17-26 for 165 yards and no touchdowns. This was his second-lowest amount of passing yards this season, the other being a few weeks ago against the Packers. However, the key to his play was he played turnover-free football for the fourth time this season, with three of those resulting in wins, do you see the trend?
Overall Grade: B

Running Back

This may be the highest grade of the day for the offense seeing as they resulted in all three Lions’ touchdowns. Justin Jackson led the way in yards with 66 yards and he did so on only nine carries. Jamaal Williams got the bulk of the work though, rushing 17 times for 64 yards, and adding three of the four touchdowns. D’Andre Swift also seemed to get going a little bit more as he carried the ball five times for 20 yards and a touchdown; he also caught three passes for 12 yards. This unit was a big factor and took advantage of a weaker rush defense, rushing for a combined 149 yards.

Overall Grade: A+

Wide Receiver

This unit combined for one 122 receiving yards on 11 catches for an average of 11.1 yards a catch, not a bad stat line for the receivers, but it doesn’t match what the running game did. Amon-Ra St. Brown led the way with seven catches for 76 yards the only other two wide receivers to make catches were Kalif Raymond who caught three of the seven balls thrown his way for 33 yards, and Tom Kennedy who caught the only pass he had thrown to him for 13 yards. DJ Chark did make his return but was only targeted once and he failed to make the catch.
Overall Grade: A-

Tight Ends

The Lions don’t use their tight ends as much, but it seems Goff has made a connection with Brock Wright as he was targeted twice, catching both passes for 20 total yards. He had a chance at a touchdown but was tackled at the one-yard line and that touchdown ended up going to Williams.
Overall Grade: B+

Offensive Line

I’m going to give this group a high grade because, well, without the job they did yesterday the Lions don’t have 160 yards on the ground and Goff did not get sacked once yesterday. I’d consider that a solid day at the office. However, Penei Sewell did have a couple of penalties so that will affect their grade a little.

Detroit Lions Week 11 Report Card: Defense and Special Teams

Defensive Line

Well, what can Aidan Hutchinson not do? He once again had an interception, and he really may be one of the best coverage linemen in the league. He has the ability to read the play and he can just drop back into coverage. The one name that needs to be mentioned is Alim McNeil, his stat line may only say three tackles, one assist, and one sack, but he was on the force out there on the field. John Cominsky also managed to get a sack as well for the Lions lineman.
Overall Grade: A-

Linebackers

They did their job and they shut down Saquon Barkley, that can also be said for the Defensive Line. But, he’s quick and able to get to the second level and the linebacking core didn’t allow him the ability to do that as he was held 22 yards on 15 carries.
Overall Grade: B+

Defensive Backs

The Giants’ passing attack wasn’t much of a concern heading into this matchup but that changed as Daniel Jones threw for 341 yards. The issue from this one is the Lions lost Jeff Okudah to a concussion, which started to show as the game went on; it’s hard missing your shutdown corner. Kerby Joseph also managed to pick off Jones on a beautiful read for his third interception of the year. Overall, I thought the secondary could have done better but they didn’t do too badly.
Overall Grade: B-

Special Teams

The Kicking game did its job as Michael Badgley improved his season total to six for six on field goals making a twenty-four-yard field goal on the opening drive for the Lions and he continued his perfect record on extra points and improved to 12 for 12.

Jack Fox was brought out to punt five times in this one and he pinned the Giants inside the 20 once. He averaged 42.2 yards a punt and his longest punt was 63 yards, not a bad day for the best punter in the league.

Coaching

I want to put this win on Aaron Glenn’s shoulders as he prepared all week on how to stop another solid rushing attack and he did it. He shut down one of the leagues leading rushers. His defensive unit held the Giants to eighty-nine yards on the day which isn’t bad especially since the Giants usually average 164.7 yards a game and after this one that numbered changed to 157.2 rushing yards a game.

It’s also apparent Dan Campbell has finally made himself comfortable with his decision he s, seems to be making the right calls with Ben Johnson on offense. Although, when the first drive came to an end, I did find myself saying go for it, I’m glad they took the points instead and it got the team rolling for the whole day.
Overall Grade A-
