The Detroit Lions’ search for a new offensive coordinator is heating up.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson is flying to Detroit to interview for the Lions’ vacant OC position on Thursday. Robinson is considered a strong candidate and is drawing interest around the league, including from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
One of the biggest reasons Robinson is intriguing for Detroit is his history with quarterback Jared Goff. The two worked together with the Los Angeles Rams, where Robinson served in multiple offensive roles, including assistant quarterbacks coach and later pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach. That familiarity with Goff, and with the offensive system the Lions still largely operate, could make him a seamless fit.
Robinson, 39, is currently the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, a role he assumed after building a strong reputation on Sean McVay’s Rams staff. His coaching résumé includes:
- Los Angeles Rams (2019): Assistant quarterbacks coach
- Los Angeles Rams (2020): Assistant wide receivers coach
- Los Angeles Rams (2021): Assistant quarterbacks coach
- Los Angeles Rams (2022–2023): Pass game coordinator / quarterbacks coach
- Atlanta Falcons (2024–present): Offensive coordinator
Before coaching, Robinson had an eight-year NFL playing career as a backup quarterback. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State and later spent time with the Seahawks, Lions, and Bengals before retiring in 2013.
He also owns a Super Bowl ring from the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory, adding championship experience to his résumé.
With Detroit looking to replace Ben Johnson and keep its high-powered offense humming, Robinson’s blend of quarterback development, play-design experience, and prior work with Jared Goff makes him a name to watch closely as the interview process continues.
