Detroit Pistons discussing Josh Smith trade

ESPN’s Marc Stein reported on Thursday morning that the Detroit Pistons and Sacramento Kings are revisiting a trade scenario that would send Josh Smith to the Kings. Stein also reported that the two teams are looking for a third team to facilitate the deal.

Stein also said:

“Skeptics will inevitably question whether the Kings should indeed take the gamble of trying to fit Smith in alongside (DeMarcus) Cousins and (Rudy) Gay, especially with three years and $40.5 million remaining on Smith’s contract from the Pistons last summer and in the wake of his struggles playing alongside Detroit big men Andre Drummond and (Greg) Monroe,”

That’s what worries me about this deal really happening. Are the Kings really this dumb that they’ll add Smith to a team that already has Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins? That’s an implosion waiting to happen, are the Kings really this crazy to facilitate this deal?

Also, who would the third team be? Given Sacramento’s interest in Rajon Rondo and the fact that Rondo and Smith are best friends, the Boston Celtics could be the third team. Who would the Pistons get in this deal? Possibly a Jeff Green from the Celtics.

This is all purely speculation and I don’t think this trade would happen. I don’t think the Kings are that dumb to take Smith and all of his problems. However, if Stan Van Gundy can pull this off and trade Smith, it would be a terrific start to his tenure in Detroit.
