Not long after Jalen Duren’s future with the Detroit Pistons appeared to be in serious doubt, the outlook has shifted dramatically.
According to Hunter Patterson of The Athletic, Detroit remains confident it will reach a new contract agreement with the 22-year-old center despite weeks of stalled negotiations. While talks have not progressed significantly since June, league sources now believe the momentum favors Duren remaining in Detroit.
For the Pistons, that’s exactly the outcome they have been hoping for.
Duren’s Options Have Become More Limited
When The Athletic first reported in early June that Duren was disappointed with Detroit’s initial contract offer, the possibility of a sign-and-trade quickly became one of the NBA’s biggest offseason storylines.
Since then, however, the landscape has changed.
According to Patterson, Duren met with both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings as potential alternatives. Neither scenario ultimately gained traction, including Sacramento’s widely reported interest despite its willingness to discuss a package involving All-Star center Domantas Sabonis.
With the Lakers reportedly moving forward by signing Walker Kessler and the Kings no longer appearing to be a viable landing spot, Duren’s leverage in negotiations has diminished.
Pistons Still View Duren as a Cornerstone
Despite the contract stalemate, Detroit has never wavered publicly in its desire to keep Duren.
According to The Athletic, a league source said re-signing the young center remains the Pistons’ No. 1 priority this offseason. The source also expressed confidence that both sides will eventually reach an agreement that works for everyone involved.
That stance aligns with everything President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon has said throughout the offseason about maintaining a competitive core while remaining financially responsible.
Duren is coming off a breakout campaign in which he earned Third Team All-NBA honors after averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier young centers.
Qualifying Offer Remains an Option
Technically, Duren could choose to accept Detroit’s $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
However, Patterson notes that such a decision would carry significant risk.
Accepting a one-year deal would leave Duren vulnerable to injury while delaying the opportunity to secure the kind of long-term, nine-figure contract that players in his position typically seek after an All-NBA season.
For that reason, league observers continue to view a multi-year agreement with Detroit as the most likely outcome.
