ESPN Metrics Still Have Pistons Bound for Playoffs

0

Memphis Grizzlies Vice President of Basketball Operations John Hollinger created a metric for ESPN during his time with the network that soon became a staple for their website’s NBA Page. His Power Rankings utilized his own statistical metric system to rank teams based on multiple categories to compare them to their peers. Despite Hollinger’s departure from ESPN in late 2012, the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” continues to use his metric system to create their Power Rankings.

Interestingly, Hollinger’s Odds currently have the Detroit Pistons in as the 8th seed as of January 26th, 2015. Here are the Odds’ full tables as of January 26th:

Hollinger’s Odds have the Pistons in the eighth seed despite starting 5-23, dealing with the Josh Smith fiasco, losing Brandon Jennings for the season, and losing three of their last four games. Hopefully this optimism can keep up as the season reaches closer to April. The Pistons surely need some fortune on their side after Jenning’s leg injury, but according to the odds by Hollinger, things may still be working in their favor.

For those curious as to how these odds are created, here is an explanation on how the system works, via ESPN:

Hollinger’s NBA Playoff Odds are based on the Hollinger Power Rankings, designed by John Hollinger.

The Hollinger Power Rankings are a measure of each team’s performance in the season so far.

Based on those rankings, each day the computer plays out the remainder of the season 5,000 times to see the potential range of projected outcomes. The results reveal the most likely win-loss record for each team — and what the odds are for each team to make the NBA playoffs, win the NBA title, win the lottery, and so on…
