Detroit Red Wings 2016-17 Outlook: Steve Ott

AGE: 34

CONTRACT: Ott signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with Detroit during the summer of 2016; his cap hit is also $800,000.

2015-16 REGULAR SEASON STATS: 21 games, two assists, 34 PIM, -3 rating

2015-16 PLAYOFF STATS: Nine games, one assist, 8 PIM, +1 rating

CAREER REGULAR SEASON STATS: 795 games, 106 goals, 175 assists, 1,475 PIM, -58 rating

CAREER PLAYOFF STATS: 24 games, four goals, six assists, two PIM, -6 rating

Steve Ott joins the Detroit Red Wings after having spent time with the Dallas Stars, Buffalo Sabres, and St. Louis Blues.

He’s made his career as an agitator with nearly 1,500 PIM in his 13 seasons in the NHL. However, he’s also key at killing penalties and in the face-off dot. He’s also a valuable veteran presence in the locker room, and has already clicked on Detroit’s fourth line this pre-season with linemates Luke Glendening and Drew Miller.

Ott brings an element of toughness and sandpaper to a Red Wings lineup that hasn’t been known for dropping the gloves of late. Ott has also promised to make life difficult for opponents this season.

Ott missed the majority of last season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn hamstring. Once he became a free-agent, he jumped at the chance to come to Detroit.

BIGGEST QUESTION: Will Ott’s tenacity and toughness benefit the Red Wings style of play, and will he help rejuvenate Detroit’s 4th line?

2016-17 Projection: 70 games, five goals, nine assists, 115 PIM
