Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has chance to add future assets

Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman hasn’t been shy in the least about acquiring future assets in the form of draft picks that will be at his disposal as he reshapes the team he led for over two decades back into a winner.

And with the short term deals that he’s given the likes of Bobby Ryan, Vladislav Namestnikov and Troy Stecher, Yzerman will once again have the chance to be wheeling and dealing at next season’s trade deadline.

Last season, he jettisoned both Mike Green and Andreas Athanasiou to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for future draft selections.

Should he perform well with Detroit this season, Ryan could be a prime candidate to be sent to a contending team in exchange for future draft capitol. Additionally, defenseman Marc Staal (in the final year of his contract) could also be an attractive option for teams looking to add defensive depth in hopes of making a long playoff run.

This year’s recent draft saw Yzerman bring aboard 12 new faces, the most of any NHL team along with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With several tradable assets currently on the roster, Yzerman will certainly have a golden opportunity down the road to acquire additional draft selections.

For Staal, the news of his trade to Detroit came as a shock, but that initial feeling soon gave way to excitement as he described earlier this afternoon on a conference call with media members.

“I just got a call – I didn’t have much of a heads up, but just got a call and told me I was on my way to Detroit,” he explained regarding the trade. “I didn’t really have much of a heads-up; I just got called and they told me I was on my way to Detroit.
