Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman makes decision on F Filip Zadina

Heading into Sunday’s game, Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman had an important decision to make regarding F Filip Zadina and that decision has been made.

By playing in Sunday’s game, Zadina has now played in 10 games this season, which means his three-year, entry-level contract is now in effect.

Had Yzerman decided to send Zadina down to Grand Rapids for the remainder of the season, the entry-level contract would have been delayed until the 2019-2020 campaign.

According to Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill, the decision had much more to do with what was best for Zadina’s development and much less to do with when the entry-level contract went into effect.

From The Detroit News:

“That wasn’t ever going to be the overriding factor, or anything like that,” Blashill said. “The biggest thing is where is best for his development.”

“When we called him up, we needed him,” Blashill said. “He’s staying because he’s played well enough. What needs to do to stay is to keep building on his play. (Saturday) he played with (Valtteri) Filppula and Mantha. He’s on the power play.

“Keep being a big factor in games. Two games ago he was excellent, and last night he was good. Keep going between good and really good as much as he can.”

Nation, did Yzerman make the right move by keeping Zadina in Detroit?
