When Steve Yzerman took over as general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, it did not take him long to make it clear that building a contender was going to take some time.

Well, we are now approaching the midway point of the 2019-2020 season and there has been no NHL team as bad as the Red Wings. In fact, through their first 36 games, they are 9-24-3 (21 points), which is easily the worst in the league.
Though there are a plethora of reasons why the Red Wings are struggling, one of the biggest reasons has been their goaltending situation.
For goalies who have played in a minimum of 11 games, Jonathan Bernier (3.26) ranks No. 50 in goals-against average, while Jimmy Howard (3.94) ranks dead last in the league.
Moving forward, Yzerman has a big decision to make. One option would be to just roll with Bernier and Howard and hope the first half of this season has been a fluke while another option would be to sign a free agent in the offseason or make a trade.

Personally, if I were running the show, I would attempt to trade for Alexandar Georgiev of the New York Rangers.

Unlike the Red Wings, the Rangers are stacked at the goalie position and they would likely be willing to make a deal if the return package was right.
Since coming to the Rangers in 2017, Georgiev, who is still just 23-years-old, has steadily improved and if the Red Wings were able to bring him in, he would immediately become the No. 1 goalie for the foreseeable future.
