Red Wings select Dennis Cholowski 20th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft

After trading the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft to the Arizona Coyotes, the Detroit Red Wings had the 20th overall selection in the first round. Get to know the first member of the Red Wings’ 2016 draft class, Dennis Cholowski.

Player: Dennis Cholowski

Team: Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL)

Born: February 15, 1998 in Langley, British Columbia

Position: Defenseman

Height: 6’1

Weight: 176 lbs

Shoots: Left

Strengths: Power play presence, skating ability and vision

Weaknesses: Strength and positioning

Player Comparison: Nick Leddy

Outlook: Dennis Cholowski will not be rushed at all. He’s already committed to St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Watch for him to develop at the collegiate level and transition over to the pro level after his collegiate time comes to an end. I see Cholowski developing his game well at St. Cloud State, making the transition to the pro level much smoother. He’ll get more time to develop with the Grand Rapids Griffins for a few years. If he were to crack the Red Wings’ roster, I see that happening in about six seasons for so. Who knows, if he proves to take what he’s learned quicker than expected, you never know, he could see himself donning the ‘Winged Wheel’ sooner, rather than later.
