After agreeing to terms with left winger Bobby Ryan, they've signed free-agent defenseman Jon Merrill, formerly of the Vegas Golden Knights, to a one-year deal.

Merrill will help shore up Detroit's blue line after the departures of Jonathan Ericsson, Trevor Daley and Madison Bowey.

The 6'3, 195 lb. Merrill grew up in Grand Blanc and Brighton, MI and also played collegiately with the Michigan Wolverines. He was drafted 38th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2010, and was later selected in the expansion draft by the Golden Knights in 2017.

He's played in 356 career NHL games, registering 61 points and 195 PIM.

According to Ottawa Senators writer Bruce Garrioch, the Red Wings are going to be signing free-agent forward Bobby Ryan to a one-year contract; the move was soon confirmed by the Red Wings.

The deal is reportedly worth $1 million. The move will provide Detroit with depth scoring, give them another option on the power play, and also give them another right-handed shooter.

Ryan, 33, was drafted 2nd overall by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2005, and twice played against the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs (2009, 2013). He was traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2013, and eventually helped them to within a game of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017. He was waived by the Senators earlier this week for purposes of buying out the remainder of his contract.

After struggling with substance abuse, Ryan was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy this past season for perseverance and dedication to hockey after successfully completing treatment.

In 833 career games, Ryan has tallied 254 goals and 301 assists.
