The Detroit Red Wings will honor one of the franchise’s greatest icons, Alex Delvecchio, throughout the 2025-26 season by wearing a commemorative #10 patch on both home and road jerseys. On nights when the team dons their Centennial uniforms, players will also wear a special helmet sticker to pay tribute to the late Hall of Famer, who passed away in July at age 93.

A Lifetime in the Winged Wheel
Delvecchio’s career represents everything the Red Wings stand for; loyalty, leadership, and quiet excellence. After joining the team full-time during the 1951-52 season at just 19 years old, he went on to spend his entire 24-year NHL career in Detroit, a rarity even in his era.
Skating alongside legends Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay, Delvecchio helped form the legendary “Production Line,” one of the most dominant trios in hockey history. Together, they powered the Red Wings to three Stanley Cups (1952, 1954, 1955).
A longtime team captain that played in 13 All-Star games, Delvecchio totaled 1,281 points (456 goals, 825 assists) in 1,549 regular season games ranking among the top scorers in franchise and league history (for that time period).
A True Detroit Legend
When Delvecchio retired, he trailed only Gordie Howe in career games played, assists, and points; a testament to both his skill and longevity. The Red Wings retired his No. 10 jersey on November 10, 1991, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977. In 2017, the NHL named him one of the “100 Greatest Players” of all time.
But for many in Detroit, Delvecchio was more than just a stat line. His humility, work ethic, and connection to the community made him a model of what it means to wear the Winged Wheel.
Honoring a Century of Greatness
This tribute comes as part of the Red Wings’ Centennial celebration, marking 100 years of hockey in Detroit. Fittingly, Delvecchio’s legacy, one built on loyalty, leadership, and love for the game, perfectly captures the spirit of the franchise as it begins its next century on the ice.
