Detroit sports fans are grieving today after longtime columnist, broadcaster, and radio voice Pat Caputo revealed that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, a condition he described as commonly referred to as a “death sentence.” In an emotional public message, Caputo shared that the illness struck suddenly and led to multiple serious complications that placed him in the ICU for several days, leaving him bedridden for weeks.

Caputo, now in his mid-60s, has been a pillar of Detroit sports media for more than four decades. Raised in St. Clair Shores and later Birmingham, he attended Groves High School before graduating from Michigan State University. His journalism career began at The Oakland Press in 1983, where he covered the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and later became the paper’s sports columnist. Even after his departure from the paper in 2020, he continued his impact as a voice for Detroit sports through WXYT-FM (97.1 The Ticket) and various television and podcast platforms.
Over the years, Caputo has been recognized among the top sports columnists in Michigan and the nation, admired not only for his knowledge and insight, but also for his steady presence and deep love for the Detroit sports community.
His announcement — raw, vulnerable, and deeply human — hit the city hard. Caputo closed his message with words that reflect both the shock of his reality and the grace with which he faces it:

I’m so very sorry! My husband and I were just saying last night that we haven’t seen Pat on Sports Works in a while and I was worried about him. Pat, if you’re reading this, we are praying for you, so many people care about you, and we’re rooting for you!
So sorry to hear. I hope he is getting treated at a Center of Excellence for Pancreatic Cancer. I faced this 2 1/2 years ago and I’m cancer free.

Sorry everyone, all your prayers aren’t going to help him. This is a horrible, painful death as my friend went through this exact same thing. I hope he goes quickly and it doesn’t drag out. So sorry Pat, get your affairs in order and get right with God! And thanks for years of entertainment.

Didn’t your parents or anyone ever teach the compassion that if you don’t have anything good to say then you don’t need to say anything at all.
I’ve lost a couple of friends and family to pancreatic cancer but I would never presume to say what you did no matter how much my loved ones suffered. There’s no good purpose for doing such a callous comment.
Not everyone has the same severity and I believe your attitude is what will help you through the process whether or not you beat your prognosis. Why try to take away someone’s hope ?

Pat, My thoughts and prayers are with you! It’s been years since we crossed paths but I hear about the Detroit sports scene and you frequently through friends and the media. I’ll never forget the times we spent together at the OP and covering events. It now seems like a dream. I pray the docs can find a way to reverse this as medical treatments are advancing at warp speed it seems.
