Detroit Tigers 3B Jeimer Candelario lands on IL

The Detroit Tigers are losing a key piece of the lineup, while also getting one back.

The Detroit Tigers are in the Steel City for a two-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in which they'll be looking to put the bad taste out of their having been swept by the New York Yankees out of their mouths. And at 21-33 so far in 2022, they'll be needing to put together some momentum in the win column if they have any hope of the thought of meaningful baseball later this year.

Prior to the start of tonight's series opener, the team announced a series of roster moves. INF Jeimer Candelario, who suffered a shoulder subluxation in Sunday's loss against the Yankees, has been placed on the 10-Day injured list. Conversely, the team has reinstated OF Austin Meadows from the 10-Day injured list.

Candelario was injured as he attempted to field a grounder on the third-base line from Josh Donaldson and soon departed.

The Detroit Tigers will be looking to get back on track

The presence of Meadows will be a welcome return to the Tigers lineup. He's just completed a four-game rehabilitation stint with the Triple-A affiliate Toledo Mud Hens, in which he went 2-for-13 with a home run and two walks. He had originally landed on the IL after experiencing symptoms of vertigo. So far in his first season with Detroit, he's amassed a stat line of .267/.362/.347 with no home runs, 11 RBI, and nine runs scored in 101 at-bats.

Meanwhile, Candelario has hit .181 with six doubles, two triples, five home runs, 17 RBIs, 11 walks, and 47 strikeouts in 52 games this season, along with a .237 on-base percentage. His five homers are tied with Jonathan Schoop for most on the team.

“His shoulder, he felt it shift a little bit when he dove and hit the ground,” team manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday of Candelario. “He's got to get a battery of tests. I imagine he's going to be sore.”

Tonight's game against the Pirates will begin at 7:05 PM EST.
