The Detroit Tigers are in need of pitching…dire need. This team has struggled to get much of anything consistent out of their rotation, with injuries decimating things in the team’s starting rotation. But, with a recent addition to the team’s roster, there’s a chance that a familiar face could be returning.
The Detroit Tigers announced Tuesday that Beau Brieske underwent an injury setback and will need more time on the IL. That being said, Garrett Hill is going to slide into his spot in the upcoming rotation, leaving Friday’s game listed as a “Mystery Starter,” according to Evan Woodberry‘s tweet.

Wednesday: RHP Drew Hutchison
Thursday: RHP Garrett HIll
Friday: Mystery Starter
Saturday: RHP Matt Manning— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) August 9, 2022
Jokes aside, the mystery may not be all that hard to pinpoint. Daniel Norris is scheduled to start in Toledo with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers before the deadline and offered some pitching depth, which might just be the perfect remedy for this broken rotation.
The catch with this prediction is that Norris is listed on the team’s 40-man roster. It would require a corresponding move to bring Norris into the clubhouse before Friday. As it stands, it does seem like Norris could very well toe the rubber on Friday in a Tigers uniform.
Detroit Tigers’ “mystery starter” might be Daniel Norris.
Norris is someone who can come into the organization and eat up some innings. After all, the team’s de facto “ace” is Matt Manning, with Garrett Hill being the team’s second-best option. There’s room for improvement, or even just a new face to shake things up. Norris could be that.
There are a couple of names on the team’s 40-man roster that could be designated for assignment. A shift of Brieske into a lengthy IL stint as he recovers slowly from bicep tendinitis issues could also free up a spot but also dampen the mood, losing him for such an extended period.

But there are a few options that could bring some roster moves. Michael Pineda is the guy who matches with the corresponding move to make room for Norris. There are some other options along the roster, but it just feels that Norris could very well be returning to the team’s roster soon.
Norris has made 27 appearances in the big leagues in 2022, all with the Chicago Cubs. He pitched to a 6.90 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and punched out 43 opposing hitters over 30 innings pitched. He’s been someone the Tigers know well, pitching in the team’s rotation the last few years before getting traded at the 2021 trade deadline.

Things could come full circle for Norris and the Tigers if he does get moved to the team’s roster in time to start on Friday.
