DETROIT, Michigan —

On a blustery day at Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers knocked out 17 hits, including 4 from Miguel Cabrera to defeat the New York Yankees, 8-4.

The Detroit offense was firing on all cylinders, but especially from the top 3 in the order. Austin Jackson, Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera combined for 10 hits. Jhonny Peralta and Andy Dirks had a pair of hits each. Detroit jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a sac fly by Prince Fielder to score Austin Jackson. Things would remain quiet until the 5th inning, when a Torii Hunter double, followed by a Cabrera RBI single made it 3-1. Miguel came around to score on a sac fly from Martinez, and Peralta singled to score Prince Fielder to cap a 4-run 5th. It was 5-1 after 5.

New York made an attempt at a comeback in the 6th, with Travis Hafner and Lyle Overbay knocking in runs. But Detroit went out the next half inning and got their big lead back. Jackson scored on a fielders choice, then Dirks knocked in Hunter. And just like that it was 8-4 Tigers. The score wouldn’t change.

Max Scherzer went 5 innings, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs while striking out 7 Yankees. The bullpen tandem of Albuquerque, Downs, and Benoit was almost perfect.

Alex Avila went 1 for 4, pretty good considering what must have been on his mind all game. Avila’s wife Christina is in the hospital, expecting the couples first child. Best wishes to the Avila family!

Detroit will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1:05 pm, when Justin Verlander takes on CC Sabathia. It should be a dandy! GO TIGERS!
