Detroit Tigers GM Al Avila, manager A.J. Hinch comment on hiring of Chris Fetter

The Detroit Tigers made things official with a key addition to their coaching staff this morning, bringing aboard former University of Michigan pitching coach Chris Fetter.

Fetter comes to Detroit highly accredited, having helped guide the Wolverines to the 2019 College World Series championship, and is viewed as one of the game’s rising stars. Under his tutelage, William Tribucher (14th round, Rockies), Jayce Vancena (31st round, Tigers), Alec Rennard (free agent, Pittsburgh Pirates) and Troy Miller (free agent, Toronto Blue Jays) have all reached the majors from Ann Arbor.

New team manager A.J. Hinch, whose hiring was made official late last month, his excited over what Fetter will bring to the Tigers.

We’re thrilled to welcome Chris, his wife, Jessica and son, Cole into our Tigers family,” Hinch said. “His reputation as a top-level developer of pitching talent is known across baseball, and I couldn’t be happier to have him join our major league staff here in Detroit. Dating back to his playing days, I’ve always known Chris to be a very bright baseball mind, progressive thinker, and great communicator, all of which are essential traits of a successful coach.”

For GM Al Avila, he’s looking forward to the key elements of the game that Fetter’s presence will supplement for Detroit.

“We’re particularly excited for Chris’s transition to professional baseball,” Avila said. “Through his time in the game, Chris has established excellent communication skills with players, and will work with them using traditional mechanics, analytics and biomechanics, each of which are key parts of our player development process at both the Major and Minor League levels.”

Fetter is a former pitcher himself, having played for the Wolverines from 2006 to 2009, making three All-Big Ten teams and earning All-American honors.
