“Sweet” Lou Whitaker played 2,390 games over 19 seasons with the Detroit Tigers. During that time he was named American League Rookie of the Year, went to five All-Star games, and helped lead the Tigers to a 1984 World Series Championship.
Now Whitaker is back with the team once again as he has been working as a special assistant during Spring Training.
“Al brought him to me,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. “He called me about it and then we called Lou.”
Ausmus said he’s given Whitaker free reign to work with the infielders as he sees fit.
“I just told him to mix in where he can,” Ausmus said. “If he has something he wants to talk to the infielders about, do it. He’s another resource.”
