The Detroit Tigers have seen their pitching staff take enough of a beating in 2022. The injuries have consistently started to pile up, and it’s been a revolving door of pitchers coming in and then heading to the Injured List (IL). On the bright side, the pitchers who have stepped up have been doing great. The “next-man-up” mentality has gotten it done.
Matt Manning is now the Detroit Tigers’ de facto ace with all of the injuries. Some can argue for Eduardo Rodríguez, but Manning has been churning out good starts since returning to the mound. The team came into the season with Manning being a fourth or fifth starter, but with the injuries the team has sustained, Manning has wound up jumping into the team’s ace role.
Since being trusted to the team’s “ace” role, he has gotten the job done well. He’s stepped up and been able to settle back in nicely. He underwent some injury trouble earlier this summer, as expected with any Tigers pitcher at this point. However, Manning was able to bounce back smoothly.
He’s been stringing together solid starts, and the Tigers should be happy with his performance thus far. He’s been a reliable option for the team to call upon every fifth day. Manning gets the job done consistently and aims to finish the 2022 season on a high note.

The Detroit Tigers have trusted Matt Manning in his return, and he has manufactured good starts all year. But lately, he’s starting to churn them out. He’s made seven total starts, totaling 38 innings pitched in 2022 for the Tigers. He has accumulated a 2.37 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.

He’s punched out 31 opposing hitters over his 38 innings of work, and his latest start against the San Francisco Giants was another example of him getting the job done. He pitched six innings and punched out eight hitters on the day. He did not walk anyone and came away with the win while not allowing any earned runs.

It was another example of Manning getting the job done. He was able to hone in the command of his fastball. His slider had good depth and was a pitch he turned to throughout the outing. It landed for a strike and induced swings and misses. He was able to attack early in the count and seemed like he was on cruise control.
Manning battled with Logan Webb, who was solid through the first four innings before the Tigers’ offense got to him in the fifth inning. But Manning battled well and pieced together another solid start. It’s been great to see him find this kind of success as he continues to churn out quality starts.
If he can finish the 2022 season strong, it will mean a lot for the team moving forward. With long-term injuries hindering Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal‘s start to the season, Manning can use this as an opportunity. If Manning can settle in and be a middle-of-the-rotation starter or even near the front of the rotation with all of the absences, it will be a victory.
After all, Manning was the ninth overall pick of the 2016 MLB Draft, so expecting him to pan out as an ace or a no.2 starter is not that crazy. Now, after his road to the big leagues, I think it is still reasonable to project him as a middle-of-the-rotation arm who brings impact to the Tigers’ starting rotation.
