Detroit Tigers OF Riley Greene likely to miss Super 2 status

As the 2022 season approached, most believed the Detroit Tigers would head north with their top two hitting prospects, Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene.

Unfortunately, Greene suffered a fractured foot just before the start of the season and he was shut down and forced to go through a rehab process, which has included time with the Toledo Mud Hens before the Tigers feel he is ready for a call-up.

Greene has now been with the Mud Hens for 54 at-bats this season and he is batting .296 with one home run and seven RBIs. He has also added three stolen bases, which is a great indication that the organization does not have any concerns at all about his foot.

Riley Greene likely to miss Super 2 status

On Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic released an article that included a section about Riley Greene and how he could end up missing out on Super 2 status by a couple of days.

What is Super 2 status? Here is how Major League Baseball defines it as:

Super Two is a designation that allows a select group of players to become eligible for arbitration before reaching three years of service time.

To qualify for the Super Two designation, players must rank in the top 22 percent, in terms of service time, among those who have amassed between two and three years in the Majors. The specific cutoff date varies on a year-to-year basis.

In his article, Stavenhagen noted how Greene's foot injury not only cost him a spot on the Tigers' Major League roster but it could also cost him Super 2 status.

But Greene’s impending call-up (there’s still no clear indication of how soon it will happen) could coincide closely with the looming Super Two date.

It’s unlikely the Tigers will consider that as much of a factor in deciding when to promote Greene. But these types of things can be important to players. It seems likely Greene will miss the Super Two cutoff by only a handful of days.

Let's hope this all works out for the best because Riley Greene is a great young man.
