Detroit Tigers hitters could not figure out Cleveland Indians starter Shane Bieber Thursday afternoon as they were shut-out 4-0 in the final game of a three-game series Thursday afternoon. Starter Spencer Turnbull didn’t have his best day, as Indian hitters got to him early scoring in the first, third and fourth innings. Turnbull went only four innings, allowing eights, three earned runs, with four strikeouts on 91 pitches dropping his record to 0-2.

Tigers defense, on the other hand, was stellar. Left fielder Dustin Peterson made an all-out diving catch off the bat of Jose Ramirèz in the top of the third. Niko Goodrum had another outfield assist throwing out Brad Miller at home plate in the top of the fourth. Jeimer Candelario was able to make an athletic play and throw on a drop bunt getting the batter at first base, and Greyson Greiner threw out an attempted steal of second base in the top of the seventh. So far Tiger catchers, Greiner, and John Hicks have thrown out five potential steals. Tiger relievers too were a bright spot on an otherwise grey day at Comerica Park. Blaine Hardy, Drew VerHagen, Reed Garrett, and Victor Alcántara all combined for five innings of one-run ball.

Lack of Offense

The only offensive threat the Tigers posed all afternoon happened in the bottom half of the fifth with runners at first and second but Josh Harrison lined to third for a force out at second squashing their best scoring chance of the day.

Shane Bieber had the Tiger hitters off balance all day spotting his fastball and commanding his off-speed pitches striking out six in seven innings allowing only three hits improving to 1-0. Leonys Martin and Carlos Santana drove in all four Cleveland runs and were on base a total of eight times.

According to the Tigers, right fielder Nicholas Castellanos was scratched today due to a right toe injury, and outfielder Mikie Mahtook was designated for assignment as JaCoby Jones was activated from the injured list and in center field. He went 0-3 with two strikeouts. The Tigers now travel to Minnesota for a short two-game series Saturday and Sunday. According to the Twins, tomorrow’s game is postponed due to inclement weather and will be rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on May 11.

That took place earlier at Little Caesars Arena which means Yzerman probably is looking for something to do for the remainder of the evening, right?

According to Tony Paul of the Detroit News, it “looks like” Yzerman will be throwing out the first pitch before tonight’s game between the Tigers and the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.

The Tigers even have a uniform ready for The Captain.

Nothing has been officially announced but it looks like Yzerman will indeed be throwing out the first pitch before tonight’s game.
