The Detroit Tigers have added some experienced catching depth to the organization.
According to Evan Woodbery, the Tigers have signed veteran catcher Carlos Perez to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Toledo. Perez is expected to fill the roster spot vacated by Tomás Nido, who was recently released. In a corresponding move, Bennett Lee has been transferred back to Double-A Erie.
Veteran Depth Behind the Plate
Perez, 35, has appeared in parts of five Major League seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, and Oakland Athletics. Across 278 big league games, he owns a .218 batting average with 17 home runs, 78 RBIs, and a .592 OPS.
His most productive recent MLB season came with the Athletics in 2023, when he hit .226 with six home runs and 20 RBIs in 66 games.
Although Perez has not appeared in the majors this season, he spent time in the Houston Astros organization, batting .222 with eight home runs and a .699 OPS in 57 games for Triple-A Sugar Land. He also played 14 games in the Mexican League, where he hit .190 with one home run.
Insurance for the Stretch Run
The signing appears to be more about organizational depth than an immediate path to Detroit. With Toledo in need of another veteran catcher following Nido’s release, Perez brings more than a decade of professional experience and nearly 300 games of Major League service.
While he is unlikely to generate headlines on his own, Perez gives the Tigers another experienced option should they need catching help during the second half of the season.
