Let’s face it, in terms of his on-field production, Detroit Tigers 1B/DH Miguel Cabrera is certainly not the same player who was a perennial All-Star, an MVP, and the best right-handed slugger in the game.
Instead, Cabrera is now pushing 39-years-old, and he is likely entering the final seasons of his MLB career.
But that does not mean Miggy has not provided some excitement in the twilight of his career as he reached 500 career home runs in 2021 and he is on the verge of picking up his 3,000th career hit (he currently is sitting on 2,987).
During a recent interview with Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, Tigers pitcher Casey Mize talked about what it was like to watch Cabrera chase some amazing milestones.
“Growing up watching Miggy be the best player in baseball and now being his teammate, I haven’t been up for very long and have seen a small part of his career, but it’s good timing on my part to see him achieve these amazing things. It’s really cool to see somebody make history. Seeing 500, I was so fired up for him. Those stories I’ll be telling forever. I was there for that. We took a photo after the game, and I’ll do the same when he hits 3,000. It’s cool to walk into the clubhouse and see him. It puts a smile on my face every day watching him compete, love the game and accomplish greatness. That’s what we’re all striving for. We’re all striving to be Miggy in our own way and achieve our own greatness. To watch somebody actually do it, it’s really remarkable.”
Let’s hope the Tigers can make one more run (or more) before Miggy calls it a career.
