Detroit Tigers ‘Spider Monkey’ released into the wild

According to a report from Emily Waldon, the Detroit Tigers have designated P Daniel Stumpf for assignment. Stumpf has cleared waivers and can elect for free agency.

In case you are wondering about the “Spider Monkey” reference in the title, that is what former Tigers pitching coach Chris Bosio said was his nickname for Stumpf when he was accused of referring to somebody as a “monkey” in the Tigers' clubhouse.

When asked about the alleged nickname, Stumpf said he had never heard of it.

From Detroit Free Press:

Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Stumpf has no knowledge of the “spider monkey” nickname that put him at the center of Chris Bosio's firing, the Free Press has learned.

Bosio told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday (June of 2018) he was fired as Tigers pitching coach for saying “monkey” in the clubhouse, a reference he claims was part of a “spider monkey” nickname meant for Stumpf but was taken out of context.

“Spider Monkey is not a nickname I have been called or I'm familiar with,” Stumpf told the Free Press.
