Let’s face it. Nothing seems to be going right for the Detroit Tigers these days. After dropping their 8th consecutive game on Saturday night, Detroit now sits dead last in the American League.

So, why not mix things up a bit?

That’s exactly what manager Brad Ausmus has decided to do for Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres. The most notable change is that Miguel Cabrera will be hitting second in the batting order.

Ausmus admitted there is no rhyme or reason to the new lineup and that he is just hoping it sparks something good.

From MLive:

“We’ll see if it helps,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. “I don’t know that there’s any real logic behind it, but you just hope it changes your luck.”

Miguel Cabrera has started two games in his career batting second. Both were in 2004 with the Florida Marlins. Virtually all of his career starts have come batting third or fourth.

Ausmus said the move was for one day. After that, “we’ll see what happens.”

“We’re not winning the other way, so let’s mix it up a little bit,” he said. “The truth is, you could put those names in a number of different orders, but that’s way they came out of the hat and that’s what we’re going with.”

Who knows, maybe the Tigers will erupt for double-digit runs on Sunday and it will be the start of a 10-game winning streak to get them back in the mix.

Wishful thinking? Yeah, well, that’s about all we have right now.
