Detroit Tigers Week in Numbers – A Respectable Week

The Detroit Tigers have officially made it past the three-quarters mark of the season! Whether or not that’s cause for excitement, I’ll let you decide.

The Offense

In a total of seven games played this week, the team actually did pretty decently overall. They won four games (two against Cleveland, two against the Angels), including a victory over starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani! Speaking of the game Ohtani started, that will lead us right into the play of the week: Riley Greene‘s 448-foot home run off Ohtani on the first pitch he threw!

Overall, Victor Reyes led the way offensively for the week with 10 hits in 26 at-bats. He also made a very nice leaping catch in the rain on Sunday. Nobody else had more than six hits this week. The team combined for 17 extra-base hits (12 doubles, a triple, and four home runs), which is well above their average. Rookie Kerry Carpenter enjoyed a nice week, hitting his first two career home runs on back-to-back nights.

The Pitching

On the other side, the Detroit Tigers started seven different pitchers this week. Yep, seven starters for seven games. Drew HutchisonBryan Garcia, Garrett Hill, Daniel NorrisMatt ManningTyler Alexander, and Eduardo Rodriguez all got their turns this week.

Yes, that indeed does mean that Rodriguez is back after his lengthy stay on the restricted list. Upon his return, veteran reliever Wily Peralta was designated for assignment. Each of the seven starters this week made it at least five innings, with the longest start of the week belonging to Matt Manning (seven innings). Overall, the starting rotation combined for a sparkling 2.23 ERA.

The bullpen, however, did not fare as well this week. Alex Lange and Andrew Chafin (though there was some really bad luck involved for Chafin) most notably stuck out, giving up three and four runs, respectively. The bullpen finished the week with a collective 5.22 ERA. The good news? Closer Gregory Soto only allowed a single run and closed out the week with three saves!
