Detroit Tigers: The Week in Numbers 7/4-7/10

These are the weeks that are fun to write about! Though the weekend wasn’t fantastic, the Detroit Tigers actually had a very impressive week overall.

After a four-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park, the team split another four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on the road.

Overall, Detroit scored 39 runs for the week in eight games. That’s an average of 4.87 runs per game. They only allowed 28 for the week, good for 3.5 a game. The pitching was good for the most part, with only the third game in Chicago really being the only one to get out of hand (8-0 loss). Their high-water mark for runs scored came in the third game against Cleveland when they won 11-4.

Individually, Jonathan Schoop led the way at the plate this week. He went 12-29 over the course of the eight games, including a 6-8 day on Monday (doubleheader). While only one of his hits went for extra bases (a double), he also drew three walks and stole a whopping four bases.

On the other end of the spectrum, rookie Riley Greene didn’t have a great follow-up to his hot first week. While he did have two doubles and drew three walks, it wasn’t the same kind of week as we’d initially seen from the youngster. This week, he went 6-34 at the plate.

Another noteworthy performer at the plate this week was catcher Eric Haase. He went 6-17 (.353) with a couple of very timely home runs.

It was not a great week for outfielder Robbie Grossman. On top of going just 2-20 this week at the plate, he also dropped a popup on Sunday. This ended his streak of consecutive games without committing an error at 440 games.

The starting rotation was also solid this week, combining for a 3.34 ERA. Rookie Beau Brieske had unquestionably the best start of the week. He started the first game against Chicago and went 6 1/3 innings while only allowing two hits. He walked a batter as well and didn’t allow a run.

As usual, the bullpen had another terrific week; they combined for an ERA of 1.92 and continue being one of the strongest in the game.

Detroit’s six-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday, but it was their longest streak of the year so far.

Here’s a look at the numbers for the week that was.
