As Miguel Cabrera was taking a sip of coffee in the clubhouse preparing for extra innings on his birthday, Dixon Machado ended Wednesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The game was a 2-1 affair heading into the eighth inning, which included a solid 6 1/3 inning quality start for Matt Boyd who struck out six batters before the O’s broke it open with a three-run frame. John Hicks recaptured the lead with a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead. The Orioles tied it back up in the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit home run from Luis Sardiñas, setting the stage for Machado.

Machado led off the bottom of the ninth and took a 1-0 fastball off Pedro Araujo deep to left field to walk it off, giving the Tigers their sixth win of the season, 6-5.

Meanwhile, Miggy, who had already homered earlier in the game, did not get to see Machado’s blast as he was back in the clubhouse grabbing a cup of joe to warm up and prepare for his next at-bat.

Cabrera told ESPN reporters in his postgame interview that he was in the clubhouse looking for coffee, “but when I got my first drink, I see Machado hit a home run and was jumping here in the clubhouse.”

This is the second straight year that Miggy has hit a home run on his birthday. He has been electric throughout his career on his birthday going 21 for 53 since he came into the league, per MLB.com reporter Jason Beck.

The Tigers look to make the series sweep against the Orioles on Thursday. Jordan Zimmermanwho took a line drive off the face in his last start, takes the mound and looks to get back on track and notch his first win of the season. First pitch is at 1:10pm.
