According to Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron, the Cowboys should make a play for Detroit Lions defensive tackle D.J. Reader in an effort to fix their struggling run defense. Dallas ranked near the bottom of the league in rushing defense during the 2024 season, and Reader could be the anchor they desperately need.
“The Lions’ D.J. Reader has been considered a cut candidate and could fit in nicely with the Cowboys,” Cameron wrote, noting Reader’s 91st-percentile run-defense grade over the last three seasons.

Reader, who signed with the Lions ahead of the 2024 season, did battle injuries in previous years but remained healthy last season, posting a career-high three sacks and a solid presence inside.
Thanks, But NO THANKS!
But here’s the catch: Detroit’s not likely to play along.
Despite Reader carrying a hefty cap number, the Lions likely see him as essential insurance while Alim McNeill recovers from ACL surgery. They also know better than most that depth on the D-line is non-negotiable, especially after the injury chaos they endured last season.
So while it’s a fun idea for Cowboys fans—and yes, Reader would be a massive upgrade next to Osa Odighizuwa—this is one trade that feels more fantasy than reality.
