Doomsday Plan: Who would replace Jim Harbaugh if he left?

Current Wake Forest defensive coordinator Mike Elko

This man is becoming the new “hot coordinator” in college football. Throughout the 2016 season, ACC ADs and coaches sang praises for the defensive genius at Wake Forest under Dave Clawson. The Demon Deacons touted a respectable defensive squad and Mike Elko was the reason for it. Many believe the entire reason that Wake Forest is bowling is rooted in the defense Elko has cultivated. This list has run the motif of defensive minded coaches for the most part and Elko is arguably the best one of the bunch on that side of the ball. Brown is easily the more sensible hire, but the Demon Deacons coordinator could emulate the best parts of the Michigan program with a rugged and powerful approach to the program. Elko also showed prowess at the MAC level with Toledo-based Bowling Green State University.

Bitter rival Notre Dame has set up an interview this week for Elko and it seems like only a matter of time before this man lands at the helm of a Power Five program. In the circumstance of Harbaugh leaving, he should be at the front of the list.

Doomsday Rater: 9/10
