The Detroit Red Wings will get a visit from an old friend tonight at Little Caesars Arena, as the Vegas Golden Knights make their first ever trip to the Motor City. Former Red Wings forward Tomas Tatar will play his first career game against the Red Wings, from whom he was traded at this year’s deadline.

The Golden Knights are the surprise of the NHL this season. With a 42-19-5 record, they lead the Pacific Division by nine points and have set the record for most wins by an expansion team.

In the meantime, Detroit will have a new face in the lineup as they’ve recalled forward Evgeny Svechnikov from the Grand Rapids Griffins, and he’ll play against the Golden Knights. He replaces forward Frans Nielsen, who was concussed on a hit by Boston Bruins forward David Backes (who was suspended three games as a result).

Nielsen is expected to miss at least the next two games.

Detroit’s top selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, Svechnikov has scored seven goals and 15 assists in 52 games with the Griffins. Last season, he put up 20 goals and 31 assists in 74 games and helped the Griffins to the AHL Calder Cup championship.

He appeared in two games for the Red Wings last season, and scored the shootout winner on April 3 against the Ottawa Senators at Joe Louis Arena, a 5-4 Red Wings win.

Former Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood was known for making big saves. He was also known as one of the few goalies to score an empty-net goal.

On March 6, 1996 the Wings were up 3-2 against the Hartford Whalers when they pulled their goalie for an extra skater. They tried to dump the puck in but Osgood had other thoughts and launched it across the ice and into the empty net giving the Wings a 4-2 victory.
