Your BFF tips are here! Each week through the remainder of the season I will breakdown the fantasy impacts of the Detroit Lions players as well and their opponents. This is just one guys thoughts on a few players we’re either cheering for…or against. (BFF=Brad’s Fantasy Football)
QB- Could we actually consider benching Matt Stafford? He’s down his #1 WR(Johnson) and his #1 pass catching RB(Bush) has basically gone MIA of recent. Ebron, Fauria and Pettigrew are all injured. With that being said…I still think you play Stafford. The lions are a pass first team(30 passes minimum in every game) and he’ll get enough reps in against a bad Atlanta secondary to get you closer to 20pts than 10.
RB- Joique Bell is officially the #1 RB. He’s getting more then 20 touches a game and Reggie Bush just can’t seem to stay healthy. Assuming they both are “healthy”, I see Bell getting most the carries and the more likely RB to break the 10pt marker. Bell is your goal line back which means Bush is likely only scoring on a long run or catch. I see Bell as the safe play and Bush as the “boom or bust” play. Theo Riddick may get carries but not enough to justify him in anything less than a 14 team league unless you’re playing for him to vulture a short yardage TD. UPDATE: Bush designated as DOUBTFUL.
WR- Don’t read into the news that Calvin Johnson is looking at playing this week. It just doesn’t make any sense with the BYE only a week away. If he does play I see it more of a decoy to have Atlanta preparing for him. He is more likely to put up one of those 1 catch for 7 yard outputs than the typical Megatron numbers we are use to. I do like Golden Tate as a top 10 WR this week. With the deep threat role basically gone I expect Stafford to be looking to offload the ball quick to Tate. I could see Tate seeing 15 targets this week and a few redzone looks. Tate is the only useable WR this week for the lions.
TE- Just nobody here worth playing this week. Detroit is down it’s top 3 TE’s to injury and Kellen Davis just arrived this week.
K-No way…not off soccer grass(yes it’s different than NFL grass), with our kicking history, in a foreign country. No. No. No. Detroit has the NFL record for futility in kicking through 7 games. Until we see a Lions kicker make a few without a miss, look elsewhere for your kicker.
QB- Matty Ice! He’s got one of the best WR’s in this game in Julio Jones and a top 20 WR in Roddy White. They’ve got basically no running game and the Lions front 7 are nasty good. I expect Atlanta to air it out and test our secondary. With that being said….his offensive line is terrible. He’ll be running for his life and despite the weapons i’ve got Matt Ryan as my #16 QB this week. I just can’t imagine him having any time to really throw deep and when he does, the Lions will be playing the pass.
WR- Julio Jones has seen at least 8 targets in every game…so why no TD since week 3? They have no offense line. Matt Ryan is running for his life and is forced to throw quick. Julio is a deep play threat and just isn’t having time to get behind the secondary and into the endzone. Jones still is must play every week, but owners have been disappointed with the output this season. I see Jones with lots of catches, but a TD seems unlikely as Matt Ryan likes to spread the ball around but a talent like Jones get’s your start every week for upside.
RB- This is the worst matchup possible for Steven Jackson and Antone Smith. A weak offensive line versus the #1 defense is not a good matchup for any RB, not to mention neither guy has showed any signs of success this season. I don’t have either guy’s as top 20 RB’s this week.
TE- Tell me who the Atlanta TE is…1…2…3…Go! No, not Tony Gonzalez, but it might as well be. Nobody has produced anything at TE this season for the Falcons. If you’ve got Bear Pascoe or Levine Toilolo on your roster, you’re likely in last place in your league.
K- Matt Bryant has been around awhile. He’s still got a leg (hit 54 yards this season), but I don’t trust Wembley stadium’s soft grass. I’m expecting that field to get pretty well destroyed, not ideal for kicking. I expect teams to basically rule out kicks over 50 yards and play field position when a long FG attempt is involved.
QB:Matt Stafford-10, Matt Ryan-16
RB:Joique Bell- 12, Theo Riddick-40, Steven Jackson-30, Antone Smith-45
WR: Tate- 7, Julio Jones-5, Roddy White-22
TE: No top 30 TE’s
K: Matt Prater- 19, Matt Bryant-15
