Dylan Larkin’s future with the Detroit Red Wings remains unsettled, but the captain has not disappeared from the Detroit sports scene.
Larkin recently joined Detroit Lions stars Aidan Hutchinson and Amon-Ra St. Brown on the golf course for content connected to Hutchinson’s 4th and Fore golf brand. The Hockey News reported on the appearance, which included Larkin teaming with Cam Kostus against Hutchinson and St. Brown in a two-on-two competition.
The timing is difficult to ignore.
Larkin remains the Red Wings captain, but he also remains at the center of an unresolved trade request that has stretched deep into the offseason.
Dylan Larkin’s Red Wings Situation Has Not Changed
Larkin requested a trade following Detroit’s latest season without a playoff appearance. Steve Yzerman publicly confirmed the request in June and said there were no guarantees the organization would accommodate it. NHL.com reported that Larkin provided a short list of teams he would approve as potential destinations.
Weeks later, there has still been no trade.
Even Yzerman’s departure from the general manager position did not appear to change Larkin’s position. His request reportedly remained in place after the front-office change, ending at least some speculation that a different organizational voice could quickly repair the relationship.
That possibility had been worth considering. A change at the top created an opening for the organization and its captain to reconsider where things stood, which was the basis of an earlier case for the two sides to attempt a reconciliation. So far, there has been no public indication that has happened.
Recent reporting has instead continued to describe the situation as a stalemate, with Larkin controlling potential destinations through his trade protection and Detroit needing to find a return it considers acceptable. Daily Faceoff examined why a deal has yet to materialize.
Golf Outing Is Interesting, Not Evidence of a Reconciliation
Seeing Larkin alongside two of Detroit’s most recognizable Lions is notable because of everything surrounding him, but it should not be treated as evidence that his Red Wings situation has changed.
This was a golf appearance, not a hockey announcement.
There has been no reported withdrawal of the trade request, no completed deal and no indication that appearing in Detroit-centered content with Hutchinson and St. Brown carries any significance in negotiations between Larkin and the Red Wings.
What it does show is that Larkin remains connected to Detroit’s larger sports community even while his hockey future here is uncertain. After more than a decade with the Red Wings, that should not be surprising.
It simply looks a little different when the captain is smiling on a golf course with two Lions stars while everyone waits to find out whether he will still be wearing the Winged Wheel when the games begin.
