Former Cal safety signee Ernest Nunley announced his commitment to the Wolverines on Tuesday night, just days after picking up an offer from the new Michigan coaching staff. The three-star defensive back had recently completed an official visit to Ann Arbor, and it didn’t take long for things to click.

Nunley had originally signed with Cal in early December. However, he was later granted a release from his national letter of intent, allowing him to reopen his recruitment. Michigan quickly emerged as a serious player once safeties coach Tyler Stockton got involved, with the Wolverines making it clear they wanted to add another young defensive back to the class.
Ranked as the No. 121 safety in the country by 247Sports, Nunley brings versatility and upside to a Michigan secondary that is reloading under its new staff. He’s expected to enroll early, arriving on campus later this month, which will give him a head start heading into spring practices.
For Michigan, this is a quiet but important win on the recruiting trail, adding depth, competition, and another developmental piece to the back end of the defense as the program looks toward the 2026 season and beyond.
