With a pedestrian 3-8-1 record, the Detroit Lions have officially seen their playoff chances disappear once again.
And while speculation continues to grow around the job security of head coach Matt Patricia, there’s been no official indication from team ownership as to where he stands in their eyes. And while there’s certainly no absence of fan and media thoughts on what should happen to him, one ESPN writer believes that his seat is getting a little bit warmer.
Michael Rothstein writes, “Patricia’s record has left him facing weekly questions about his future. It’s entirely possible the Ford family will give him another season to implement his vision with general manager Bob Quinn, but securing two straight losing seasons and two years without a playoff berth after his predecessor had winning seasons in three of four years has put him in trouble.”
For Rothstein, he defines warm seat as a coach that’s “not safe if the season ends up a disappointment”.
Patricia was hired in 2018 after helping guide the New England Patriots to multiple championships as defensive coordinator. But the team’s defense has consistently ranked among the NFL’s worst this season. His overall record as a head coach is 9-18-1.
