Ex-Spartan Keith Appling to spend one year in jail after pleading guilty to gun charges

News came down from the Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit on Monday that former Michigan State men’s basketball standout Keith Appling will serve one year in the Wayne County Jail, after pleading guilty to multiple charges stemming from an incident last August.

Appling, a Detroit native and product of Pershing High School, pled guilty to charges of carrying a concealed weapon as well as evading police. The 25-year-old was arrested back on August 28 last year after a traffic stop. Appling fled from authorities and reportedly threw a bag carrying a loaded firearm outside his vehicle before being stopped. He then drove off once again after being pulled over.

Authorities also said that there was a “strong odor of marijuana coming from Appling and his vehicle when they pulled him over and requested to see his driver’s license. According to the Associated Press, it’s a sentence agreement of five years probation with no possibility of early release, the first year being served behind bars.

A sentence hearing for Appling will take place in early August. He is still facing multiple other gun charges in both Detroit and in Dearborn, incidents that also occurred last year prior to this August-related incident.

Appling played in over 140 games from 2010-14 at Michigan State, averaging 10.6 points and 3.3 assists per game. He currently ranks in the top-20 in program history among all-time scorers with just over 1,500 career points. He has since then played two seasons in the NBA Developmental League (2014-16) and played in five games with the Orlando Magic during the 2015-16 season. Appling did not play at all this past season.
