Examining the Detroit Red Wings’ 2010 draft

Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a look at each of the last 10 drafts for the Detroit Red Wings. We’ll touch on where players were selected, how they performed in Detroit, and where they are now. Our first stop: the 2010 draft.

2010 Detroit Red Wings draft picks

Round One, Pick 21: Riley Sheahan

Played 292 games with the Red Wings from 2011-2018. Scored 38 goals and 60 assists during his tenure with Detroit. Was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins with Detroit’s fifth round pick in 2018 for Scott Wilson and Pittsburgh’s third round pick in 2018. Since the trade, Sheahan played 122 with Pittsburgh, scoring 18 goals and 23 assists before being traded to the Florida Panthers. In his NHL career, he has played in 447 games, scoring 58 goals and 91 assists.

Round Two, Pick 51: Calle Jarnkrok

Never played an NHL game with the Red Wings. Jarnkrok was traded with Patrick Eaves and Detroit’s second round pick in 2014 to the Nashville Predators for David Legwand. He has since played 395 games for Nashville, scoring 66 goals and 83 assists. After the trade, Legwand played in only 21 games for Detroit.

Round Three, Pick 81: Louis-Marc Aubry

Never played a game for the Red Wings, or in the NHL for that matter. Aubry played in parts of six seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL before heading overseas to play for the Berlin Polar Bears of the DEL. Never afraid to drop the gloves, Aubry racked up 271 penalty minutes during his six seasons with the Griffins.

Round Four, Pick 111: Teemu Pulkkinen

Played in 79 games for the Red Wings over the course of three seasons, scoring 12 goals and nine assists. Known for his blistering slap shot, Pulkkinen was never truly able to find the space to use his only legitimate weapon in Detroit. He was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Wild in October of 2016, where he played a total of nine games. He scored one goal for Minnesota before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes. He played four games for Arizona, scoring one goal. He played the entire 2017-18 season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL before heading overseas to the KHL.

Round Five, Pick 141: Petr Mrazek

Mrazek played in 166 games over six seasons with the Red Wings, racking up 72 wins. Detroit traded Mrazek to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018 for a conditional third round pick in 2018 and a conditional third round pick in 2019. He only played 17 games for Philadelphia. The Carolina Hurricanes signed Mrazek for the 2018-19 season, where he had a career revitalizing season, winning 23 games with a 2.39 goals against average in 40 games.

Round Six, Pick 171: Brooks Macek

Never played a game for the Red Wings, and still has yet to play in the NHL. Macek signed with the Vegas Golden Knights before last season, and played his first season of American professional hockey last year, with the Chicago Wolves. He scored 26 goals and 34 assists in 64 games, including a hat trick against the Griffins, ironically enough.

Round Seven, Pick 201: Ben Marshall

Never played with the Red Wings, or in the NHL. Only played in 25 games at the AHL level, and is currently playing in the Slovak league overseas.
