Examining the Detroit Red Wings’ 2011 draft

Over the next few days, we’ll take a look at each of the last 10 drafts for the Detroit Red Wings. We’ll touch on where players were selected, how they performed in Detroit, and where they are now. Our next stop: the 2011 draft.

Detroit Red Wings 2011 draft picks

Round Two, Pick 35: Tomas Jurco

Played 159 games with the Red Wings from 2013-2017, scoring 15 goals and 24 assists. Detroit traded Jurco to the Chicago Blackhawks in February of 2017 for a third round pick in the 2017 draft, which they used to draft Keith Petruzzelli. Since the trade, Jurco has played only 42 games at the NHL level, all with Chicago. Every game he played last season was at the AHL level.

Round Two, Pick 48: Xavier Ouellet

Played 141 games with the Red Wings from 2013-2018, scoring five goals and 18 assists. Was bought out by Detroit in June of 2018, then signed with the Montreal Canadiens. Has played in 19 NHL games since.

Round Two, Pick 55: Ryan Sproul

Played a total of 28 games with the Red Wings, scoring a goal and six assists. Sproul was traded in October of 2017 to the New York Rangers for Matt Puempel. Since the trade, Sproul has played in 19 games with the Rangers, scoring a goal and four assists.

Round Three, Pick 85: Alan Quine

Never played a game with the Red Wings, although he did play three games for the Grand Rapids Griffins after being selected by Detroit. After the selection, Quine ultimately decided not to sign with Detroit. He was then drafted again in 2013 by the New York Islanders in the sixth round. Has since appeared in 97 NHL games, scoring a total of nine goals and 18 assists.

Round Four, Pick 115: Marek Tvrdon

Never played a game in the NHL. He did play 51 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2014-15, scoring 10 goals and 19 assists, but was then demoted to the ECHL. Since, he has bounced around five different leagues overseas, including the Slovak league, EIHL, and the AlpsHL. No longer considered a Red Wings prospect.

Round Five, Pick 145: Phillippe Hudon

Never played a game above the ECHL level until last season, when he played three games for the Laval Rocket of the AHL. Is no longer considered a Red Wings prospect.

Round Five, Pick 146: Mattias Backman

Never played a game with the Red Wings, and has yet to play in the NHL. After 18 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2014-15, Backman was traded with Mattias Janmark-Nylen to the Dallas Stars for Erik Cole and a third round draft pick in 2015. Backman went on to play 110 games with the Texas Stars of the AHL after the trade, but has since jumped overseas, where he has played each of the last two seasons.

Round Six, Pick 175: Richard Nedomlel

Never played a game with the Red Wings, or in the NHL. He played five games with the Grand Rapids Griffins between the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations. Since the trade, Nedomlel has moved overseas, playing the last four years in the Czech league.

Round Seven, Pick 205: Alexey Marchenko

Not a bad story for a seventh round pick. Marchenko played 110 games for the Red Wings between 2013-2016, scoring three goals and 16 assists. As a result of a logjam on defense, Marchenko was placed on waivers in February of 2017, and was ultimately picked up by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played only 11 games with Toronto, however, and has since taken has talents to the KHL in Russia.
