OTD: Red Wings F Johan Franzen scores five goals against Ottawa

Six years ago today, Johan Franzen scored five goals for the Detroit Red Wings in a 7-5 win against the Ottawa Senators. Franzen became the first Red Wing to score five goals in a game since Sergei Fedorov did it in 1996.

Franzen’s hockey career is likely over, as he has not appeared in a game since October of last season due to his lengthy history of concussions. The Red Wings have certainly missed having Franzen in the lineup, as they have struggled with scoring goals in recent years. Also unfortunate for the Red Wings is that Franzen is still under contract through the 2019-20 season.

Love him or hate him, “The Mule” was a solid power forward for the Red Wings throughout his career and was a vital member of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2008.
