Flurry of Tigers’ roster moves land Jordan Zimmermann, Alex Wilson on DL

Yikes, Monday was not a great day for the Tigers.

First, the team blew a four-run lead and lost to the Texas Rangers 7-6. After the game, it was announced that a series of roster moves will be made that will land both Jordan Zimmermanand Alex Wilson on the disabled list.

As noted above, Daniel Norris is also going to be transferred from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

For Zimmermann, the timing is less than stellar. A rough start to the season may have been in the rear view mirror, as he pitched five scoreless, two-hit innings in his last start on Saturday. His injury came to be while playing catch on Sunday, after being diagnosed with a shoulder impingement by the Rangers’ orthopedic surgeon.

“They found a spot that was hot and it got to the point where we have to let it calm down,” manager Ron Gardenhire told the Detroit News. “He noticed it when he was playing catch.”

After seven starts this season, Zimmermann sports a record of 2-0, with an ERA of 4.88. He has struck out 32 batters in 31 1/3 innings.

The decision to place Wilson on the disabled list came after he strained his left plantar fascia while running to cover first base. He was unable to walk off the field on his own power, and his trip to the DL is less shocking than Zimmermann’s.

Wilson’s season has gotten off to a slow start from a statistics stand point. He currently has a record of 0-3, with a 4.50 ERA in 20 innings, in which he has served up four home runs.

With Zimmermann’s next start not scheduled until Thursday, the team decided to call up infielder Pete Kozma, as well as reliever Zac Reininger.

Reininger is 2-0 on the season with the Toledo Mud Hens with a 2.63 ERA, with 15 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.

Kozma is batting .200 to this point with Toledo, but offers a steady defensive pedigree which makes Gardenhire more open to looking past his light bat. He is a major league veteran, having played 314 big league games with the St. Louis Cardinals
