Former Lions DE Trey Flowers finds new home

Former Detroit Lions DE Trey Flowers has found a new home, as he'll be taking his talents to South Beach and joining the Miami Dolphins

The Detroit Lions made the decision earlier this year to part ways with popular DE Trey Flowers, who originally came to the Motor City as a free agent signing under ex general manager Bob Quinn.

Despite putting up seven sacks in his first year with the Lions, Flowers was limited to a total of 14 games over the past two seasons thanks to a multitude of injuries. But now, heโ€™s getting a second chance, and itโ€™s with a new team.

Earlier this afternoon, it was announced that Flowers would be taking his talents to South Beach, joining the Miami Dolphins, whom he recently visited. The news was first reported by ESPNโ€™s Adam Schefter, and then later confirmed by Dolphins journalist Joe Schad:

โ€œCan confirm Trey Flowers agrees to join Dolphins,โ€ he wrote on Twitter. โ€œFlowers, 29, four years with Patriots and three with Lions, so he is very familiar with this defensive scheme. Flowers, 6-2, 265, joins excellent edge/end rotation. Averaged more than 5 sacks last 6 seasons.โ€

Per NFL Networkโ€™s Ian Rapoport, the deal is a one-year pact worth $2.1 million with the chance to earn up to $3 million in incentives.

It was clear that when the Lions decided to depart from Flowers, it wasnโ€™t an easy choice to make. And both GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell had nothing but good things to say about his time in the Motor City.

โ€œWe speak on behalf of our entire organization in thanking Trey for his contributions to the Detroit Lions over the last three years,โ€ Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell said in a joint statement after Flowersโ€™ release. โ€œHe has been an exemplary leader for our team both on and off the field and has helped us set a foundation for the future. Trey is a man of integrity who embodies what it means to serve his community and stand for something larger than yourself. We wish him and his family success as he enters the next stage of his career.โ€
