Former Detroit Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu has landed another NFL opportunity.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to a one-year contract with Melifonwu, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move gives Tampa Bay an experienced and versatile defensive back shortly after training camp opened.
Melifonwu Heads to Tampa Bay
Melifonwu spent the 2025 season with the Miami Dolphins after leaving Detroit in free agency.
The 27-year-old appeared in 16 games and made eight starts for Miami, producing a career-high 53 tackles, one interception and one sack. He also defended one pass during his lone season with the Dolphins.
Tampa Bay will now get a defender capable of lining up at safety, cornerback or closer to the line of scrimmage. Melifonwu’s combination of size and athleticism has always made him intriguing, though injuries prevented him from consistently establishing himself during his first four NFL seasons.
Former Lions Draft Pick Gets Another Chance
Detroit selected Melifonwu in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
His best season with the Lions came in 2023, when he recorded 33 tackles, three sacks, eight passes defended and two interceptions. His late-season surge included several impact plays during Detroit’s run to the NFC Championship Game.
Injuries limited Melifonwu to only three games in 2024, and the Lions allowed him to leave the following offseason. He signed a one-year deal with Miami and responded by playing the most defensive snaps of his career.
Across five NFL seasons, Melifonwu has appeared in 53 games with 22 starts, collecting 125 tackles, 5.5 sacks and three interceptions.
