Controversial former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is launching a new initiative.
Working with his “Know Your Rights” group, the organization will be providing free autopsies to the families of anyone whose death was “police related”.
“We know that the prison industrial complex, which includes police and policing, strives to protect and serve its interests at all costs,” Kaepernick said. “The Autopsy Initiative is one important step toward ensuring that family members have access to accurate and forensically verifiable information about the cause of death of their loved one in their time of need.”
“I am passionate about the Initiative’s impact and look forward to being a resource to victims’ family members who have lost their loved ones due to a police-related death,” said Nicole Martin, program manager for the Autopsy Initiative.
Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season when he made headlines for his protest of kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. Despite a high-profile workout with a comeback in mind, he’s remained a free-agent the past five years. He also reached a settlement with the NFL in 2019 after suing them for what he believed to be being blacklisted.
