Former Spartan Bryn Forbes to play for Spurs in NBA Summer League

In less than 24 hours, the four draft-hopeful Michigan State Spartans hoping to hear their name called by NBA commissioner Adam Silver have all found themselves a home, some temporary more than others, to begin their professional playing career.

On Draft night, it was Denzel Valentine and Deyonta Davis getting the phone call and earning almost-guaranteed roster spots with the Chicago Bulls and Memphis Grizzlies respectively. Then it was announced early on Friday that Matt Costello reportedly inked a deal with the Atlanta Hawks to play for their Summer League team and fight for a roster spot.

The last Spartan domino fell late Friday afternoon, sharp-shooter Bryn Forbes is reportedly going to try out for the San Antonio Spurs this summer, according to Forbes himself.

Forbes in his four-year collegiate career split time between the Spartans and Cleveland State, with the latter two seasons back home in East Lansing. The Sexton High School (Lansing, MI) product averaged 14.4 points per game as a senior, converting 84 percent of his free-throw attempts and knocking down better than 48 percent of shots from downtown, good for 2nd in the country.

All of those numbers were significant increases from his junior year at MSU (8.5 PPG, 80.8 FT%, 42.7 3FG%). Forbes at just 6-foot-3 at 175 pounds will be expected to beef up some and work on his ability to handle the ball and drive the lane, unless the Spurs opt to make him strictly a three-point specialist.

San Antonio on Thursday during the NBA Draft made just one pick at No. 29 overall, selection former University of Washington freshman Dejounte Murray, who last year was one of two freshmen in the country to post a stat line of at least 16 PPG, 5 RPG, and 4 APG. The other? No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons.
