One of the very few bright moments for the Michigan State Spartans last season was seeing two players selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. Among the two was defensive lineman Malik McDowell, who was drafted in the second round (No. 35 overall) by the Seattle Seahawks.

As NFL training camps get underway, teams are figuring out which players are physically ready to perform right away. However, there is some scary and unfortunate news out of Seahawks camp as McDowell will not only be missing the start of camp but will be sidelined indefinitely.

The Seahawks released this statement regarding McDowell’s situation:

“Unfortunately, Malik McDowell was involved in a vehicular accident in which he suffered an injury during the NFL break period. As a precautionary measure, Malik has remained back in Michigan under the care of physicians there. Our medical people have been in constant communication with his physicians and have been monitoring the situation. At this point it is important for Malik to stay at home and rest. We consider this a long-term relationship and will do whatever is in the best interest of Malik. We look forward to Malik’s return to Seattle and will update you with any changes.”

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said to reporters at camp that the ATV accident McDowell was involved in happened roughly a few weeks ago. While Carroll did not specify the injuries himself, multiple reports are that McDowell has suffered a concussion as well as facial injuries.

The Detroit native and Southfield High School product decided to forego his senior season at Michigan State. Prior to the 2016 season, there was some speculation as to whether or not not only McDowell could be a first-round selection, but even perhaps the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Despite a questionable reviews with his interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine, McDowell did not have to wait long before hearing his name called.

Pete Carroll was asked whether or not the Spartan rookie could miss the entire 2017 season, and responded, “we’ll see.”
