From 247Sports:
According to a report by Jenna Laine of ESPN, Hayes had been diagnosed with chronic liver disease two years ago and had been placed on a waiting list for a liver transplant at the Mayo Clinic and Northwestern Medicine after being hospitalized over 20 times in the past year. Hayes believed that the use of over-the-counter pain medications during his career combined with a family history of liver disease caused his illness.
Hayes had been in deteriorating health over the last several weeks and recently entered hospice care. According to Jim Henry of the Tallahassee Democrat, Hayes’ passing was confirmed by his family to those who had been close with him.
Rest in Peace, Geno.
