Former Tiger Dave Bergman Passes Away at 61

Former Detroit Tigers first baseman and outfielder Dave Bergman passed away Monday after a long battle with bile duct cancer. He was 61 years old.

Bergman played nine seasons for the Tigers throughout the 80’s and early 90’s, winning a World Series title during his first campaign with Detroit in 1984, hitting .273 with 44 RBI’s that year.

For his career, Bergman played 17 years, debuting with the New York Yankees in 1975 and making stops in Houston and San Francisco before settling in Detroit. His friendly disposition made him a favorite throughout his career, resonating with teammates and fans alike.

“I loved Dave Bergman,” former Tigers catcher Lance Parrish told the Detroit Free Press. “Everybody on the team loved him. He was a great friend and a great teammate.”
