Former University of Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon will become the new CEO of Toys ‘R’ Us starting July 1, according to numerous reports.
Brandon was previously the head man at Domino’s Pizza and helped the pizza chain cultivate their now famous online-order system. Despite his lack of retail experience, the hopes are that Toys ‘R’ Us can push back against the online-purchase trend to help their store sales. Places like eBay, Amazon, and other major retailer’s online stores have negatively affected the profitability of Toys ‘R’ Us and the hope is that the online innovation seen at Domino’s will help them remain afloat.
“When I got to Domino’s, I wasn’t a pizza guy either,” Brandon told the Wall Street Journal. “There is a huge advantage for a leader to come into a situation with a new set of eyes and challenge the status quo.”
Brandon acknowledged how his experience at Domino’s may carry over to his new gig.
“Customers want it when they want it and how they want it,” he said. “I’ve been through that transformation in one industry and think I could bring experience that could be helpful.”
During his tenure as athletic director, Brandon was a much maligned figure who was backed into resigning from his position last fall. His lack of communication with former U-M football coach Brady Hoke, along with controversial decisions that seemed to alienate the fan base, proved to result in a tumultuous tenure at the helm.
